This debate about the different racing styles of the current two top guns, Lewis and Max, is fascinating. How better to illustrate their different driving styles than by analysing turn5 !!!!!! So much total GARBAGE has been written about turn5 by half-wit trolls who seem to think Max needs them in his fanbase that it is high time the record was set straight ! (I consciously exclude Max's serious fanbase from this comment, who are well informed and solid F1 fans) Even before they were released by the safety car, Max was so eager to pass Lewis, he was crawling all over his gearbox, at one point nearly overtaking him, which would have been a disaster for Max. Down the first straight, Max got a fantastic tow, but couldn't outbrake Lewis into turn1 because Lewis held the racing line, rightly judging that Max would end up in the barrier if he tried, even with new soft rubbers. Turn1 to Lewis. Turns 2, 3 and 4 were not overtaking opportunities, but with the benefit of fresh rubbers, Max glued himself solidly to Lewis's gearbox and bided his time. Turns2,3 and 4 evens. Up to turn5, Lewis anticipated Max again getting a partial tow. He knew he could not out-brake him, so he again did the only thing open to him, which was to hold the racing line, anticipating that if he opened the door for Max to dive through, Max would then be off the racing line whilst Lewis could exit the corner with far better traction and speed. It was a shrewd and classic Lewis counter, creating the chance to retake the lead into turn6. If you look at the videos, that's exactly what happened. Lewis had far better track speed than Max coming out of turn5 and was almost fully alongside Max again by Turn6. Of course, with no rubber left on his 30+ old treads, he had no chance making the move stick, and the rest, as they say, is history. No one choked, no one bottled it, just great racing between a highly talented and intuitive racer and a great strategist and racing god.
